One of the most attractively designed of all the Massachusetts buttons, this ca. 1840's button is in good, non-excavated condition. Much gilt remains, there is a crisp and well-struck backmark and the shank is perfectly straight.
These buttons did see action in the Civil War. I have an excavated example from a Southern battlefield in my private collection. I am not sure if any of these went southwest for the Mexican War. That would merit a bit of additional research I haven't the time for at present.
This button would be an ideal purchase or gift for the Civil War button collector or for anyone collecting Massachusetts-related Civil War items.
