The pictures really tell the whole story of this buckle -- right down the to the documentation, which includes a handwritten guarantee from one of our hobby's legendary and most honorable dealers.
This buckle was probably eyeballed long before metal detectors...but if it was excavated, it was certainly a very early recovery. The condition is perfect, aside from the normal and very light "pebbling" that is almost always associated with a plate exposed to the elements. Gettysburg soil is seldom kind to buckles and plates, further reinforcing my suspicion that this was found quite long ago.
If you have been following my web site for any length of time, you know that I am extremely reluctant to associate any relic with Gettysburg without excellent documentation. This item, however, qualifies. It would be a remarkable addition to any Gettysburg collection. This baby will stand out across the room as it has exceptional eye appeal.
