Appx. 15" x 5" Morning Report for the famous Johnson's Island Prisoner of War camp. It's dated January, 1865 and is signed by the Sergeant responsible for roll call. The Sergeant's last name appears to be Holway or Colway but I have not been able to track him down. He signs the document as a member of the 6th Veteran Reserve Corps. The VRC was formerly known as the Invalid Corps and it was made up of sick, wounded or otherwise incapacitated soldiers who were able to do basic tasks like guard duty, hospital duty and POW camp service. (There were instances of VRC units being pulled into combat.)

The document has the expected folds and some age toning but is otherwise perfect. It's an ideal piece to frame. You could display it as-is or get a larger frame and add a Johnson's Island POW cover, a CDV or two, a ribbon...you name it. I will also include a color copy of a period map of the island.

Johnson's Island was a small islet in Sandusky Bay (Lake Erie). It was deemed a logical place to house Confederate officers who had been captured. As the war progressed, some enlisted Southerners were also interned there. Among the Confederate Generals imprisoned there were Isaac Trimble, M. Jeff Thompson, J.J. Archer and William Beall. The facility was one of the more humane POW camps maintained by either army. About 200 officers and men from the South died while incarcerated there...a much lower rate than shameful facilities like Camp Douglas or Elmira.
