This is an absolutely authentic and period ink signature of Henry A. Wise, a Confederate General and, just before the war, the Governer of Virginia. Very fine condition and mounted on a small card. This would display fantastically with a nice CDV or engraving of the great Virginian.

It was Governor Wise who signed the order for the execution of John Brown. While he may be best known for that, he was also instrumental in the war as a General. The men under his leadership are credited with saving the city of Petersburg when the first battle commenced there in 1864. He also commanded forces at the battle of Roanoke Island, the Seven Days Battles, the entire siege of Petersburg and Sayler's Creek. He fought at Appomattox but urged General Lee to sign the surrender, fearing for continued loss of life.

While Wise signatures are not rare, they are desireable because of his dual service as a politician and a General. Where else can you get a CSA General's autograph for under a hundred bucks?
