Perfect, heavily gilted example of the Pennsylvania State Seal button worn by militia from there during the Civil War.  This button is without flaw.

According to Warren Tice, this backmark is definitely Civil War as these buttons were delivered in 1864.  I won't presume to argue with Mr. Tice, whose book on buttons is really the ultimate authority.  I will only say -- in all candor -- I have never liked this particular backmark. The lettering style seems too square for pre-1865.  That said, the shank, the rim and the seal (both horses looking left) are all wartime.  And if Warren says the backmark is good, who am I to pick nits?

I'm pricing this one well below what several other dealers are asking for this specific style of button with this backmark.  I got this one in a larger group and buying that way often enables me to offer some things at great prices.  Best of all, this is a mint condition specimen.

IF YOU WANT TO ORDER AN ITEM…

(or just ask a question about it) please email me directly at cwartifax@gmail.com

Using the “Order Information” button right below the price USUALLY works, but not always.  I don’t know why, but it could have to do with spam settings on either end. The easiest way to order or inquire about an item is simply to email me directly.  Again, my email address is cwartifax@gmail.com

Thanks!
