This appx. 7.25" by 10.5" engraving is absolutely original to the Civil War period.  I am selling a couple sets of Harpers' reprints...but this one is NOT a reprint.

The condition is EXC-FINE with just some very minor soiling. No tears or creases.  The engraving itself is quite striking as it depicts a frustrated-looking Halleck. This would look awesome framed up and alongside others like it...perhaps a chronological display of each commander of the Army of the Potomac?  These engravings, though original and desireable, are pretty common...so you could get the other commanders with ease.

Henry Halleck was derisively called "old brains" and "old wooden head" by some of his contemporaries.  He was better suited to administration than to leading troops in battle or formulating military strategy.  In fact, if my recall doesn't fail me, Hallck was quite gifted as an organizer.  And before the war, he was an enormous success in helping the new state of California become settled and stable, particularly where legal matters were concerned. But on the battlefield, the old fellow just couldn't cut it.  Still, he is an itegral part of American Civil War history.  And if you require a nice engraved image of old wooden head...well...you won't do better than this.
