Covers from Camp Dennison are not rare by any means, but seldom do you find them postmarked this way. And this postmark is so crisp and legible! Condition of cover is XF/XF+ with no rips or tears (aside from the right side, where the letter was carefully opened). I wish the letter remained! Very nice 3 cent stamp with good bullseye cancellation. Back is complete and in good condition. Small traces of old mounting remain.

Cover was almost certainly sent by Alonzo P. Jaquays, who enlisted in the Ohio 9th Light Artillery in March of 1864. The cover is postmarked January 23rd of 1864, so I am not sure if Jaquays was with a different unit when he was at Camp Dennison. The 9th LA was there, also. In all likelihood, the Civil War database notation about Jaquay’s service is incomplete. I will send along what little information on him I have.

What really makes this cover is the condition and the "Camp Dennison" postmark. Camp Dennison was established by the young commander of the Ohio State Militia, a fellow named George Brinton McClellan! It was named for Ohio’s governor at the time, William Dennison. (He later became President Lincoln’s Postmaster General.) The camp was occupied by Federal troops for the duration of the war, serving as a training ground, recruitment center, hospital and way-station to the South. Troops from Camp Dennison were dispatched to protect Cincinnati in 1862 and to track Confederate General John Hunt Morgan in 1863. Many of the 50-thousand troops stationed there at one time or another ended up in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi or Georgia.

This scarce cover would frame very smartly with a period engraving of Camp Dennison. It’s a great item with crossover appeal for Civil War collectors, Ohio history enthusiasts and collectors of philatelic material.
