Very nice condition, tight and non-dug Burnside cartridge. A few dings but that is the norm with these. Outstanding patina! Aside from the Sharps and the Spencer, the Burnside was the most commonly used carbine of the Civil War. More than 40 Federal cavalry units were equipped with this weapon and not a few Confederate mounted regiments had men who used captured Burnsides.

This is not to suggest this firearm was a popular one. The peculiar shape of the cartridge lent itself to jamming and many a trooper complained about this. Still, the Burnside saw widespread combat throughout the conflict. Many a Burnside cartridge has been excavated from Civil War battle and camp sites.
