In very fine condition with only the most minimal age toning comes this rare, unlisted variant of the famed "Girl I Left Behind Me" series of Union patriotic covers. The cover measures about 5.25 by 3 1/8th inches. There is no damage or repair of any kind.

The "Girl I Left Behind" series is based on a popular song at the beginning of the Civil War. You may read part of the text of the song on the cover. In the Weiss catalog, many from this series are listed including variants that are without the verse, variants in color, variants with just the title of the song and variants like this one, with one full verse of the song. But I could find no examples of this exact scene with a full verse of the song beneath the picture of the soldier and his sweetheart.

According to Weiss, the listed covers are a rarity "C" which is fairly scarce. I can only imagine what an unlisted variant would be valued at. I got this at such a good price, however, that I can offer it to you at what one of the listed ones would likely cost.

This might be a perfect and poignant gift for a friend or family member serving our country. Or it might be just that somewhat romantic Civil War item a collector could buy for a wife, mother or sweetheart. (Because as much as I joke about it, I really think she probably doesn't want that rusty bayonet. )
