I've seen a lot of nice VA4's like this without gold, but relatively few with it. This very low-convex button almost appears to be a one-piece, but it is definitely of two-piece construction. As you can see, beautiful gilt surrounds the figure of Virtus to give it great definition. The areas not gilted any longer are a sweet, smooth chocolate brown.

This is an earlier button bearing a "Scovill" rmdc marking. I would estimate this to be 1840's to maybe the early 50's. The shank is whole, present and solid as a rock. It is, however, flat against the back.

The button has not been repaired and it has no pushes, cracks, pinholes or other flaws, save for the flat shank.

I'd be proud to have this one in my collection! It was dug on private property in Dinwiddie, Virginia. The battle of Dinwiddie Court House was a nasty affair toward the very end of the war...March 31st, 1865. I hope the Virginian who once wore this button survived to live a long, healthy and happy life!
