This buckle was probably eyeballed long before metal detectors...but if it was excavated, it was certainly a very early recovery. The condition is perfect, aside from the normal and very light "pebbling" that is almost always associated with a plate exposed to the elements. Gettysburg soil is seldom kind to buckles and plates, further reinforcing my suspicion that this was found quite long ago.
