This plate is actually even nicer than the one in my collection. I'm attached to that one and am going to keep it so this one can be yours! I paid a lot to get it but I know my clients like high-quality relics.
The plate has both hooks, 99.9% lead fill and a super-clean face for a dug plate. The tiny bit of lead flaking abated long ago meaning this box plate is sound and solid as can be. On the face, mostly under the "S", there is a very small amount of rust. It is surface rust and I am certain can be cleaned without damaging the brass. The key there is, less is more.
Frankly, I think this relic looks just fine the way it is. Put this one in your display case and I guarantee you'll have plenty of envious collector-friends!
UPDATE! I've been given more information by the person I acquired this beautiful plate from. (Thank you, sir! You are a gentleman and a scholar!)
This box plate was excavated on land that is not adjacent to the Bentonville battlefield -- it was found ON the actual battlefield! I'm informed the site was not NPS property at the time and the property owner permitted metal-detecting.
The exact recovery location was across the Goldsborough Road, from where the Cole House once stood. Morgan's Division was located on the site! I am extremely grateful to the gentleman imparting this information. Relic hunters, collectors and dealers who keep the history with the artifact are the best! I always try to do likewise. THANK YOU!
