This button has an untouched, attic patina; a perfectly straight shank; and a very crisp, small-sized "Wm.H. Smith & Co. New York" backmark outside 2 concentric rings. The condition of the button is excellent, with no dents, holes, pushes or repairs. This non-excavated cuff button could clean to mint but I have always preferred the untouched, attic-fresh look.

This particular VA cuff corresponds to Albert's VA13 and Tice's VA-222 As. 7. This backmark is listed and definitely pre-Civil War to early Civil War. It is not the most regularly-encountered backmark on an otherwise common Confederate button.
