It's a Confederate-manufactured Artillery button with an iron/tin back. It's not terribly common to see these fragile buttons retain their shank, but that is the case here. The back is stable and the shank is sound. If the button appears to be slightly misshapen, that's due to the crude nature of the manufacturing process and not to any repair or post-manufacture damage. There are no cracks, pinholes or repairs to this fine Confederate button.
It was recovered on private property, with permission, in Brandy Station, Virginia.
