What makes this splendid bit of Civil War and postal history intriguing is its shape. Near all Civil War patriotics were rectangular, but this one is almost perfectly square. I would estimate it's about 2.25" by 2.25", give or take a millimeter or two.

The color is especially vivid. The illustration depicts a pair of American flags, a laurel wreath and the bust image of Fort Sumter commander Robert Anderson. The back is black and the flap remains, although it has been reduced somewhat. (Not enough to really impact value or desirability.)

This beautiful envelope is somewhat uncommon and would make a wonderful addition to your Fort Sumter or Charleston display!
