This is really a set of items, rather than just one book. First though, I need to admit...and the pictures show the story...that this book has seen a fair amount of water damage. On the other hand, all the pages are intact and are in perfect condition! And in addition to the book itself, there are a number of additional regulation pamphlets and a couple of forms (one blank, one partially written on by the Lieutenant). These are NOT pages that have fallen out. The binding of this book, despite the water damage, is secure and as I said - every page is perfect. These are simply added US Army regs that the officer kept in his manual.

The book is signed by the owner - 1st Lieutenant T. Pfeifer M.R.O, Camp Sheridan, October, 1917. That makes this a war-date inscription. Camp Sheridan (not to be confused with Fort Sheridan in Illinois or Camp Sheridan, Nebraska - a temporary encampment during the Indian Wars) was established July 20th of 1917. It was here that National Guard troops from across the state of Ohio were trained for regular army service. Eventually, these guardsmen were formed as the 37th U.S. Infantry Division and were sent to the Western Front in June of 1918. Known as "The Buckeye Division", the 37th was bloodied at the Meuse-Argonne and Ypres-Lys (also known as the Hundred Days Offensive). The division suffered almost 800 combat deaths. Just shy of 4600 of the Buckeye Boys were wounded in action. The division's shoulder sleeve insignia is pictured below...

Though I have not researched Lt. Pfeifer, I have no reason to believe he did not eventually leave the safe confines of Camp Sheridan for the blood-soaked trenches of France. It would certainly be a worthwhile research project. Here's a great, affordable item for your WW 1 display!
