This bullet was dug on private property in Iuka, Mississippi. This was the scene of a clash between Federal forces under General William S. Rosecrans and Southern troops led by General Sterling Price. The Yankees struck quickly in September of 1862 and defeated Rebel forces before reinforcements under General Earl Van Dorn could arrive. Confederate troops mounted a stubborn resistance and killed, wounded or captured almost 800 Union men. When the smoke cleared, so to speak, the North gained the upper hand. Rosecrans had possession of the field of battle and had killed, wounded or captured roughly 1500 Southern troops.
