This is the post-Civil War version of the Spencer. You can tell by the letter "U" stamped on the base of the cartridge. Though some .56 Spencers were made after the Civil War (to comport with the M. 1860), others were made in .52 caliber by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company. Union made both calibers and stamped the metal with a letter "U". But ALL of their work was post-war. This .52 caliber Spencer would fit the M. 1865 version of the gun.

Cartridge is in excellent, non-excavated condition. This would fit perfectly in any display of Indian War memorabilia.
