This relic isn't found as often as the M. 1861 or many of the Enfields. The M. 1855 butt plate had a noticeably indented curve for the rifleman's shoulder. As you can see, that's what we have here. Best of all, both screws remain where they were when the gun was first manufactured.

I'm not sure what happened to the rest of this musket but I'm delighted this bit of it survived all those years in the soil. It was recovered in Fredericksburg, Virginia on private property. The condition is outstanding -- while no electrolysis has been done, the iron is solid and there's no appreciable flaking.
