This button may or may not be dug - I could see either being the case. The button has, over the century & a half since it saw service, acquired a deep green patina with obvious gold gilt showing through. This green could be the result of storage in a damp attic or musty basement...or it could be the verdigris that sometimes attaches to brass buried over long periods in fertilized farm fields. I think the button could clean up beautifully and thereby increase significantly in value.

The button is Civil War, bearing the correct "Scovill" backmark associated with this and many other Civil War buttons. The shank is solidly attached but bent over. That said, it is not flat against the back. The backmark, best of all, is super-crisp and legible with the naked eye. There are no pushes, dents, pinholes, cracks or repairs to this somewhat scarce button.

Maryland buttons are perfectly appropriate in Confederate and Union button collections as the Old Line State sent many volunteers South and many North. This cute little cuff has loads of potential.
