As non-excavated Confederate buttons go, this is about as untouched as they come. It's an NC8 coat button with that perfect attic patina serious collectors love. Solomon Myers manufactured buttons for both Virginia and North Carolina regiments and advertised such services quite extensively, according to Bruce Bazelon and Bill McGuinn. (They authored the important button backmark book so many of us use.)

This button has fine, exquisite detail and is - for an NC8 - a pretty crisp strike. Many NC seal buttons were crudely struck, so it's a treat to come across one with such rich lines and superb eye appeal. A button of this grade would go great handsomely paired with some North Carolina currency, or bullets & cartridges associated with the Tarheel state or even an autograph, image or document with an NC pedigree.

There has been absolutely no damage to this specimen. No repairs, no dents or pushes - just the way you want them. The shank - if it's tilted at all -- is no more than 1-2% leaning to the left. It is as strong as the day it came off the coat! The "S.A. Myers Richmond" mark is all there and mostly legible - more than enough to tell who's work this is. Remember that Myers raised-mark strikes were crude in comparison with other depressed-mark strikes of the period.
