I am eyeballing these measurements (this place is a MESS right now) but I think I am very close. This frag measures about four and a half inches across and one & a half inches thick. Possibly a mortar frag. Definitely from some heavy artillery at the very least.

This would make a great electrolysis and restoration project, though some of us like rusty iron precisely because it looks just as it did the day it came out of the ground.

In the summer of 1983, I purchased a large barrel of frags, thrown sabots, 2" canister shot and some oddball iron pieces from a digger named Ed Stotler. He lived in rural Williamsport, Maryland and hunt Antietam and South Mountain exclusively. This frag was toward the top of the pile (he had separated the South Mtn. pieces from the Antietam ones, putting the former in the barrel first.)

Ed always hunted private property.

I think you have found that heavy paperweight you've been wanting all your life! lol
