Wonderful, one page letter in period ink acknowledging payment rendered to Captain Frank Oakley of the AQM. Boilerplate content dated Feb. of 1865. Condition is excellent but for some minor wrinkling at the top left. That can be easily remedied.

But here's the cool part...

Before Captain Oakley joined the Assistant Quartermasters, he was First Lieutenant with the famous 7th Wisconsin Infantry. They were part of the heroic Iron Brigade, which fought so valiantly at Antietam, Gettysburg and elsewhere. While in combat at Rappahannock Station on September 23rd of 1862, Lt. Oakley's right arm was nearly blown off. It had to be amputated.

He left the 7th in late December of 1862, undoubtedly to recuperate. In April of 1863, he was commissioned a Captain with the U.S. Volunteer's Quartermaster's Department. It's in that capacity that he writes this brief letter.

Oakley was right handed. Having lost that arm in battle, he had to learn to sign his name left handed. You can easily discern an extreme left-handed slant as he signs.

This is an easily frameable letter signed by a true Union hero; and one with a moving story of sacrifice and courage to tell.
