This 1863-dated form is from Petersburg, Virginia and assesses taxes on income, interest, real estate, tenants and slaves. It's on wonderful Confederate brown paper and has but one age spot which affects nothing in terms of content. It has not been reduced or trimmed and is filled out in period ink. The form, which is appx. 2" x 3" is signed by John H. Patterson, Sergeant, City of Petersburg.

If you collect Petersburg items, Virginia history or slavery-related paper, this is a perfectly frameable and displayable document. Best of all, it's quite affordable. A recent auction estimate for a similar form carried an estimate of $150-$200. While I consider that inflated and optimistic, I do think I have priced this bit of American and Southern history VERY reasonably.
