This 7.5" by 5.25" picture was drawn on the 21st of July, 1862...just as Federal forces were about to assault Vicksburg. The drawing was mounted ages ago -- well over a century, most likely -- on a heavier cardboard sheet. Personally, I'd leave it just as it is because the cardboard doesn't interfere with the art work in the least. If you wanted to remove it, though, be sure to have a professional conservator float it off. Don't attempt this at home. (I can recommend someone if you like.) The condition of this exquisite and historic rarity is outstanding. It's matted and framed and I will wrap everything with the utmost care. The frame is fairly pedestrian and you may wish to purchase something more befitting this wonderful slice of Western Theater history.

The image is drawn in period ink and dated by the author. The inscription reads:

"Hd. Quarters, Louisiana Belle - Opposite Vicksburg
July 21st, 1862, - For Papa's Brave Boys John & Mott
                                         T.D."

The identity of the artist eludes us thus far. But should one be able to name the hand that penned this picture, the value would increase substantially. I have posted two photos - the first, without flash and the second, with.

In addition to the artwork and frame, I will send along the color copy of the CSS Arkansas as you see in the listing. You'll also receive a couple of write-ups on the significance of the ship as it pertains to the pivotal battle of Vicksburg.
